Palestine is not safe for general travel at this time. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to much of the West Bank, including Tulkarm, Jenin, and Tubas governorates, and against all travel to Gaza. These advisories are grounded in ongoing military operations, settler violence, and the risk of missile or drone attacks — not typical street crime. While the area records low homicide rates (0.6 per 100k) and minimal theft, the dominant risks come from political violence, sudden checkpoint closures, and movement restrictions that can trap travelers or delay exit. The humanitarian situation remains tense, with over 2,500 Palestinians displaced in 2026 due to settler attacks and access restrictions in the West Bank, according to OCHA.
On the ground, visitors report feeling relatively safe in established tourist areas like Bethlehem, Ramallah, and East Jerusalem during daylight hours, particularly around religious sites. However, this sense of safety can shift rapidly near checkpoints, during protests, or following settler incursions. Pickpocketing is uncommon but possible in crowded spots such as Manger Square in Bethlehem or the Old City of Jerusalem, and travelers should guard belongings accordingly. More concerning are scams targeting pilgrims, including the sale of fake religious relics and inflated taxi fares from unlicensed drivers near border crossings or holy sites — always agree on prices in advance and use licensed services.
To stay safe, carry multiple copies of your passport and store the original separately from copies. Avoid displaying Palestinian flags, PA/PLO materials, or any pro-Palestinian slogans when approaching Israeli checkpoints, as this can trigger delays or questioning. Monitor local news and follow guidance from your embassy or consulate, as the security situation can change with little warning. Travel insurance may be invalidated if you visit areas under official advisory against travel. Given the Level 3 UK FCDO advisory and the volatile environment, non-essential travel to Palestine is not recommended.
