Kandahar is not safe for travelers. All major governments — including the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada — maintain Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisories for Afghanistan, citing civil unrest, terrorism, crime, risk of wrongful detention, kidnapping, and limited health facilities. The city’s composite safety index is just 17/100, reflecting extreme risk driven by conflict, weak institutions, and official guidance. While Kandahar has seen reduced large-scale insurgent violence since the Taliban takeover in 2021, it remains a high-risk environment for foreigners due to arbitrary enforcement of strict social rules, targeted detentions, and persistent criminal activity.
Recent reporting confirms ongoing dangers: in September 2026, residents protested Pakistani cross-border attacks, underscoring regional instability that can spill into urban areas. In August, four people were arrested on murder and robbery charges, and in June, the Taliban executed two men accused of robbery — illustrating both criminal activity and harsh, opaque justice practices. Earlier in May, three women were found dead in Kandahar and Kabul amid rising violent crime. These incidents underscore that while foreigners are not always the primary target, they face significant risk of being caught in violence, detained without cause, or mistreated by authorities who view them with intense suspicion.
Practical safety is virtually impossible for independent travelers. Pickpocketing occurs in crowded bazaars, but armed robbery and kidnapping are far greater threats, especially near checkpoints or after dark. Scams involving fake visa assistance or impersonation of officials demanding money transfers have been reported. Medical infrastructure is severely limited — only four hospital beds per 10,000 people — and emergency response is unreliable. Given these conditions, no form of tourism or casual visit can be considered safe. Travelers should not go to Kandahar under any circumstances; if already in the country, departure via secure, pre-arranged means is strongly advised.
